this will only be useful when a number of mainstream rendering applications and modeling applications implement it, or am I missing something?

I don't see proprietary software going through the trouble (read: expense) to rewrite code to satisfy a "standard" that may weaken their brand.

I'm probably wrong, I often am, but this will maybe get implemented on opensource software level, like Blender or the like. Apart from that, dead in the water. The idea is great though...
