Mac future: Metal, not OpenCL...

Post by burnin » Sun Sep 18, 2016 1:27 am

Have noticed that the 'Apple' is trending to move towards Metal, so as title goes, am interested on more thoughts / opinions and a possible in-depth knowledge on the matter...
Have never owned an Apple HW, also since openCL is not enforced as CUDA is...
... i know nothing :?
I only hope it won't come down to vendor specific market & trade :x

Don't worry OpenCL will remain.
Metal is for other stuff. Vulkan® could be useful i think on OSX/LIN/WIN .

This is a topic I need to better understand.
AFAIK OpenCL does have different goals vs Metal or other graphic API, generic compute vs interactive graphics.
Metal, DX12, Vulkan does have all some form of Compute Shaders that allow to perform some computation, I suppose they enable features similar to Indigo ISL, useful but not powerful enough to implement a full fledged ray tracer.
Maybe an expert coder can comment.

An application that takes advantage of libraries is Metal Fractal Architect 4 available free at the Apple store.
Unfortunately my Mac Mini mid 2011 is not supported, the following ones instead yes!
Mac Mini 2011 - 2,3 GHz Intel Core i5
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 - Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 Mb.
Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB - MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6
