hi,
a simple question:
Intel QuadCore i7 3820 3.6GHZ LGA2011 5GT/S 10MB CACHE 300€
Intel SixCore i7 3930K 3.2GHZ LGA2011 5GT/S 12MB CACHE 580€
which is the best? with indigo renderer of course...
with difference?
+ G.SKILL F3-14900CL10Q-32GBZL RipjawsZ DDR3-1866 32Gb. KIT 4x8Gb. 250€
(for a total of 64gb)
any idea?

Pretty sure the 3930k will win http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/523?vs=552

It does seem to be some percent faster but it's almost 100% more expensive!
If you are not into overclocking (really simple for instance with ASUS mainboards), get the quadcore.

Here follow my 10c's worth.
Save what you can where you can and rather buy a second machine that can be a render slave.
That would mean the cheaper of the two CPU's, I'm convinced the cheaper one in itself is an overkill, I normally get a CPU from Intel's top tier in about a 3GHz flavour.
GFX card doesn't have to be super duper, something like nVidia GTX560's (if you're a fan of AMD someone else here could refer you to a decent mid-range card).
RAM, don't bother with super speeds low latency stuff, I've been there done that and burned too much money that way. 1600 MHz is fast enough, get a much as you can though.
HDD is pretty much a personal thing, go with what you need.

I found 3770k was one of the best value builds if building multiple (although this wasn't bench'd with indigo).
RAM is at a premium these days, can anyone really use over 32GB without bringing the render to a near halt due to extreme amounts of geometry?

Cinebench can be used as a good example for (multithread) performance gain that can be adapted to Indigo... here you have a +41,52% Speedup!Polinalkrimizei wrote:It does seem to be some percent faster but it's almost 100% more expensive!
I aim to get a haswell based CPU this summer and 3 slaves a little later

Yes, the 3820 cannot be overclocked, while the 3770K runs at 4.1GHz without issue with a 30€ fan. Definitely 3770K!William wrote:I found 3770k was one of the best value builds if building multiple (although this wasn't bench'd with indigo).
Also, the six cores are difficult to overclock due to thermal dissipation, while the quads are easy to push. This makes the difference narrower, and not worth the price extra (better build a slave)
