I've noticed that, if a meshlight is partially in a transparent, the part not in the material goes black, this happens in all versions of indigo i tried it... 1.0.9_2, 1.1.1 and 1.1.2
See the attached shot for details

Is the transparent closed? (Not that it should affect the part outside
)
I guess, you checked the normals myriades of times?
Really strange bug...

I made this simple experiment in order to recreate the bug. Through the right sphere there is a meshlight cylinder and inside the left sphere there is a sphere meshlight for reference.

It's not always like that... normally meshlights partly in transparent mats work just fine, but not in that very special case (a ring in a ring, like it seems to be)... however I'll do that test, too

I made a scene similar to yours and it works perfectly.

Okay I dunno what's this all about, but I made another test and it's still f00ked up...
You can find the scene file here: €dited
€dit: What prog are you using? Maybe this is related to the Cindigo export instead of indigo itself?

Look at my sign
Maybe you could export your scene to a .obj file or something so that I can look at it?

Look @ the link in my post above... There is the pigs file, just open that with Winzip/Winrar/similar to get the .obj's

I looked at the file and I didn't see anything other than that your outer torus is strangely closed.

But surely there must be a way to do it manually?

Don't partially intersect mesh lights with media, it's not allowed in Indigo
