Built-in Denoiser
Any plans to add denoising to indigo. For most of my interior renderings, I can reach 500-1000 samples in 1-3 min. after 1k-2k samples adding more samples doesn't really help any. I'd say 2k samples is the point were anything past that would be negligible returns. After that, I use denoising to finish the image. Having denoising would greatly benefit indigo and would make it much more competitive to vray.

I assume you have tried the clamping option, how has this worked for you?

It works well sometimes. Other times there is a very fine line between clamping noise vs introducing bias. I try to keep my scenes as realistic as possible.

If you have NVidia's GPU, here's a standalone build for windows of NVidia AI Denoiser from Declan Russel.
NOTE:
Works only on unidirectional PT renders. Or in other words, it doesn't do shit to BiDir renders.
Along with 'Beauty' (Image /-i) pass, you can also feed it with Albedo (-a) & Normal (-n) passes for better results.

sadly it doesn't work with indigo unidirectional PT images

A realtime denoiser would be gamechanging in speed like with the AI Denoiser from Nvidia. Indigo renders very fast in the beginning, but after that it needs much longer to clean the noise wich is easy to denoise wiıthout getting much splotches, because indigo gets the details pretty fast on the beginning.

Intel's way, HW agnostic, fast and from my experience, feels better than NVidia's - which, after a while of using, "revealed" to me in producing kind of a strange, "cellulitis-alike" splotching pattern.
Can easily be observed with low sample renders fed into latest Declan's builds (2.2 & 2.1, while previous versions looked like denoising "finer").
If you're interested in trying/testing/comparing the two and you're using Blender 2.79b, LuxCore 2.2 development version already has OIDN implemented.
While there's also D-NOISE plugin for using above mentioned NVidia's denoiser with-in Blender 2.79/2.80.

About NVidias version - color photos & renders produced with bidirectional engines weren't affected at all. (tested: Indigo bidir, Maxwell, LuxCore bidir ~ in Sept. 2018)

In luxcore it works out as a charm, but in indigo I can't get a mode to work at all.
The way I do it is, save image to exr, convert it to pfm in photoshop, apply "denoiser.exe -hdr file.pfm -o output.pfm" and the image is equal

Hi All,
We have made some progress on integrating Intel's Open Image Denoise.
Attached are some results.
Currently it works best with GPU rendering, we will have to do a little re-architecting to get it working really well with CPU rendering.
The denoiser will be available in Indigo 4.4.x, betas of which will be released once we have officially released 4.2 stable
