CPU Thread count

Post by DanJ » Thu Aug 25, 2016 10:50 pm

In Skindigo when I'm setting number of threads, the maximum I can set is 16 or I can set more by selecting the 'Auto Choose Threads' tick box. My system has 32 threads but I would like to not have to use all of them or only 16. Would you be able to change the limit on the slider please?

Thank You

Can you enter the numbers manually instead of using the slider?

Entering them manually just defaults back to 16.

Just leave 'auto choose num threads' ticked, and it should use all 32 threads, right?

Yes that does work, though sometimes I want to leave a few threads free, for example only use 28

open the .igs of your scene :

change
<auto_choose_num_threads>true</auto_choose_num_threads>
to
<auto_choose_num_threads>false</auto_choose_num_threads>

and

<num_threads>1</num_threads>
to
<num_threads>28</num_threads>

There is no benefit to doing this BTW, Indigo gives itself below-normal priority, and even if it didn't, an Operating System ensures that programs going as fast as they can don't monopolise the system resources (it cannot rely on every single program having some mechanism for being courteous to varying degrees - this is why timeslice and later preemptive multiprocessing was invented in the 70s).

It's just going to make things slower :)

It actually does help. 3dsmax for instance is much more responsive when leaving a few threads free, that's a matter of fact!

Hmmm, well, I know you're super techy guy so I can take your word for it, still I'd like to see it for myself. Both Indigo and Chaotica I have running full tilt basically all the time, and neither have any lag problems - maybe it's due to the below normal process priority, but It Should Work (TM) without that.

For me Indigos "below normal" priority also works flawlessly (I'm on C4D).
During big render sessions, where I Do animations including network rendering I still can work or do gaming without any performance hit, maybe you could reduce Indigo priority to low or raise 3D max to "above normal"...
