Sketchup 2015 - Materials feault to phong

Post by Bosseye » Tue Aug 18, 2015 11:42 pm

Possibly a bug, or maybe a feature? Either way, all textures in Sketchup seem to be tagged as Phong material rather than diffuse as default. No issue to change it in the model, but if you're not aware (or forget) then you end up with some potentially troublesome reflective materials all over the model.

Does this need fixing or can it be changed so that diffuse is the default again?

Not a bug, an intentional change by the devs. The thinking being that almost nothing in the real world is pure diffuse... You must have missed this, was quite a bit of discussion about it a while back... I'd say opinion was pretty divided...

As for changing the default, I don't think (afaik) you can change it manually.

A bizarre decision IMO.

Huh, I did miss that discussion entirely! Yes, a curious decision I'd say, but nevermind. I can work around it.

And what happened to my thread title, how on earth did I manage to type 'feault' instead of 'default'. Whoops!

..I suggest again to have a simple command in the skindigo render settings window allowing us to choose what would be the default material for the conversion from simple SUmat to IndigoMat.
To me, having all phongs is maybe more realistic but far less practical..

Agreed. It's an extra hoop to jump through.

Personally, I'd also like to see the roughness and reflectivity sliders put back into SkIndigo.
