Issue with GPU Rendering

Hi,
I just had a problem with my computer, its not really a bug but I found this section the most appropriate to post this.

After about 10minutes of rendering a scene with the GPU acceleration, wich I am testing since yesterday, my computer just shot down in emergency mode when the temperature becomes to warm.

So I 've seen that GPU acceleration is really good ! I have increased samples per pixels at about 2,5 X compared to a scene without GPU acceleration in an outside environment, and about 2 X for an inside environment but with only daylight. Its interesting.

My GPU is a Geforce GTX 260, 1,8Go.

But as I've just experienced it, it apparently heat the computer many more when using GPU acceleration than without...

I'm not really asking something precise, but I wanted to let know this detail about GPU accel, and maybe know if there was other return of that problem on other computers

If such an old GPU raises your performance that much, well... wow

If you GPU overheats, then I suggest you think about the airflow in your rig!
Removing the GPU for some action with the vacuum cleaner is also a good idea ;)

Thanks for the answer.

Well old doesn't mean bad ! ;)

It is still a very good graphic card. You might be used to bigger components, I'm still on a usual computer :P

Ok yes I maybe should add some cold solution... I ve never upgraded this computer

Not bad, only slow :P

When did you cleaned up the hardware with a vacuum cleaner the last time?
This is no joke, for overheating problems dust is reason No. 1

^^

You will think bad of me, but to be honest I bought this PC 3years ago, and I only opened it 2 times to clean the dust... ^^ last time was maybe 1/2 months ago.
But I only opened the big case, I never opened the processor box, or something else... I was affraid to broke something

Well in this case I would bet that dust is the reason for your overheating problem...

Here are some examples how your GPU may look like now ^^

But doesn't it slow the eficiency of the fan to cold the components ?

A tiny little bit, but in your case you have other problems then that ;)

I clean my dust filters once a month, and its always very satisfying to see what has not entered the case

Yes I imagine ! So I have to clean it up completely and then I will put filters

Once a month? Are there many sand storms in your home?

Even If I didn't in 3years, I always heard that a PC should be clean up of dust every 1 or 2 months, and at least 6months...
So cleaning the filters 1 time per month might be perfectionist, but it still hold the road I guess
