[REQ] Spotlight

Post by William » Wed May 22, 2013 10:12 pm

Spotlights are great for accent lights but what's more important is they can be easily (quickly!) visualised and manipulated in 3d program interface without fiddle assing around with IES files or "modelled spotlight housings".

I use spotlights all the time for accent and is a very common light type of the photographer/studio, would be great to have and very useful.

Ideally spotlight would have the following controls;
-beam angle
-softness/blend/falloff (however you like to call it)
-radius (softness of shadow)

If possible the spotlight would be invisible from behind.

Maybe some kind of IES on the fly generator in Indigo could help here!
The defined parameters for your lightsource get transfered by the exporter to Indigo and it internally translates these parameters to IES formula.

+1

Or more generally, create several types of "Emission distribution functions", the same way there are already several material types for BRDF "Bidirectionnal Scattering Distribution Functions" (diffuse, phong, specular...)

There are currently only two types : uniform and IES. There could be "softcone" (this would do the spotlight job), "gaussian", and even, why not, "dirac" or "laser" (although it would work in bidir only), and "texture" or "tabulated", which would define the amount of light emitted between 0° and 90° from a 1D table or texture.

I'm sure Ono will love the idea :)

laser is a request already (kind of), what's Dirac's scheme ?

That's roughly the same, mathematically explained. If the ideal laser emits in one single direction without any scattering, its directionnal distribution function is a 2D dirac. It's even more correct to say it's a dirac than a laser, since a laser always has a little bit of scattering, and thus could be modelled better by a spotlight or a gaussian distribution

There's always IES Gen - then you can link the IES in your favourite exporter app. The only issue I've found is that IES gen isn't the great for accurate lighting though it's good for rough IES webs (spotlights). There are also some IES files that Indigo doesn't play nice with or won't load at all (found this out trying to make IES lasers).

I seem to remember that Indigo 3 got a wider support for IES profiles meanwhile...
