I totally agree. I think designs in general have to be functional and then his form or shape follows his funtion and not the contrary.
You can't say that, I disagree completely. Functional design is a modernist point of view... it's over...
That doesn't mean form shouldn't follow function at all. Non-functional design is absolutely useless. It's called sculpture (not to bash sculpture as an art, just in terms of function and use). The fact that he's making this by hand is anti-Modernist in itself.

Form as a result of function:

Hola.
It's been a long without posting. Quite busy with the table..
This is a piece of furniture I actually made 2 years ago. The real pojects was so crazy as I din't use any screw. Only joinery and glue. I think it was my first decent model in sketchup so now I just had to bevel and texture it. The lamps is not modelled by me (was a bit lazy). I think all renders are lightened whith an exr. Hope you like.

holy moly!

great renderings!

is that a rendering too? if yes, you have mastered real photorealism. (that term is over-used nowadays, it should be reserved for works like this)

Outstanding!

That goes for the renders, as well as for the furniture design itself! I love your style.

Would be nice to see actual (real, not Indigo ;-) photographs of your furniture.
How's that table coming along that you started the thread with ?
