Fisher boat

Post by enricocerica » Sun Mar 16, 2008 10:52 pm

Hi,

This is one of my first projects I modelled and rendered with Blender about 3 years ago and I revisited it with Indigo. The rendering with Blender internal was quite easy as texturing is more simple since you could texture objects without needing to UV mapping everything.

With Indigo things are much more hard from the texturing point of vue as everything should be UV mapped. So I retextured all the objects of the scene. I also took the opportunity to change the environment, adding some rocks and other stuffs. Except the far background landescape, everything has been modelled with Blender. I was very surprised by the rendering time, external scenes are very fast (relatively) to render with Indigo, depending on the scene, the render time was about 3-6 h.

The water has been made with water settings material and I used a water surface image for the bump and a grass field image for the deep to get some variations. This was the more difficult part, I should have rendered about 40 images to get the actual result.

So here is the result with the whole scene and some closeups.

As I said on BArtists, fantastic stuff. Maybe a tiny bit less bump on the planks in the boat on the close-up. But that's nitpicking...

Also, try one with the sun facing the camera but out of the frame. If you're using specular maps, this should be wonderful...

wow thats great! wish I had the patience for that texturing
I remember the blender version was great too
the only bit that I can see is that the water seems a little dark for shallows right at the shoreline..I would have thought the gravel beach would be somewhat visible underwater...

Hey, that is one cool project !!
Well done.
Only thing that bothers me a little is, that the bump map seems to be reversed to my eyes. Blue paint seems to be lower than the parts without the paint. On 4th image for example.

Thanks for your comments,

@suvakas: Yep, your eyes don't miss anything , there were indeed a problem with the bump on the 4th image, I fixed it.

@Kosmokrator : I started to create a texture to be applied on that part of the mesh but I finally added it in postpro, I'm not happy with that as I'll have to add it if I re-render it. Some textures are home, I picked some other over the net but most of them come from CGTextures, this is probably one of the most useful link on my desktop  , thanks to them.

@Big Fan: I was really happy with the result I got with the blender rendering, not as realistic but much more artistic. The water was a hell, and I decided to go for this version, I know that some parts are quite dark and it probably needs some more tweaks, but it's ok as it participates to the perspective.

@BbB: Well seen, I fixed the bump problem. Nice idea with the sun facing the camera, I don't use spec map (I should) and most of the textures are diffuse, but I will try anyway.
