for concrete walls lovers

Post by drBouvierLeduc » Sun Nov 25, 2007 1:49 am

Gentlemen, forget flowers and sissi things. Here's a real man thing.
This beauty is made to build concrete walls. Big concrete walls.
I spent hours modelling it, tuning each piece, bevelling every single corner... God that was boring !
As it is the first time I use an indigo render for comercial purpose, I decied to post this, though it's not much of interest. I'm not fond of technical renders but you've got to pay the rent !

(ps : I should post an update at some time because I can spot a few things that suck, like some normal problems, lighting etc...)
(ps bis : Ono, as soon as the project is aproved, I promise I'll make a donation !)

thanks metapixel.
I let that picture render for ~5 hours at 1200x1600 px.
Actually it's a mix of two renders : one lite with a studio environment map, and one with a single emitter.
The typo has been added in photoshop, that's why it looks kinda weird.

Out of curiosity Dr what did you model this in and using what modeling technique? It's very nice by the way. :)

wyt -> It was painfully modelled in blender, with home-made bevelling techniques. Just kidding, I don't have any special technique, that model took me 4 days to make. Although I'm not very use to technical modelling, I found it was not that complicated with blender, it just takes lot of time.
By the way, what are your own secret techniques for your technical models ? I guess you found some hidden blender feature, otherwise I hardly explain how you managed to make those clean models I saw in your posts.

Nothing hidden that I know of. I generally use only the most basic polygon modeling tools in blender. Basically I don't use any tools that will result in messing up my polys so no booleans and no beveling tools/scripts. I suppose the key to what I do revolves more around effective use of coordinate spaces and the 3D cursor more than anything else...

I'm not really a blender pro or anything, I'm still a noob in training :P, and I don't really have a point of reference to compare my modeling technique to which is why I was curious to find out what you used on this. I'm glad to know it was blender as now I do have some sort of benchmark to compare my own work to :)

that's nice :)
I prefer flowers^^

Still, amazing modelling - maybe a close up to some special regions, like those screws, standing out on both sides?

will you texturize the thing with that text on the final piece or will you always add it in PS?

Btw, I think, both the yellow and the red are a bit too saturated... lower the rgb to 90-80% of the current brightness :)
(Or are the materials really that saturated?)

I don't know about that kram that looks like a pretty accurate powder coated paint job to me...but that's just my opinion :)

kram -> the colours are quite close to the reference pictures. Plain red and plain yellow, welcome to the builder's world.
I guess I'll have to texturize it in case I need different viewpoints.
I have antoher render cooking where you see better the small bits, will wait overnight to have a cleaner result.
Next work : back to flowers !

Fantastic modelling Docteur. It sure looks like a lot of work. Wouldn't mind seeing more details. Even screengrabs if you haven't time to render a lot more angles.

nice, clean, professional work! i love looking at these sort of pictures of brand new tools/hardware cuz i take sick pleasure in knowing that that is NOT how they will look after a couple of days on site. the only time youll see em this clean is in the store.
be cool to render a textured version after a couple months of use, if you have time!
