Once again, Philbo, very nice image!
I found the whole model looked better if I squashed it down. Here's my render with a diffuse, almost completely black, background.

Not Indigo though... Blender Internal
Not as impressive as Indigo, but I thought that they turned out neat.

with participating media, those two could be done in indigo, too

I tried the Indigo Participating Media, and I got way WAY too much participating media. I tried some various settings and couldn't get it to my liking.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

As kram said.
Then your absorbtion coefficient spectrum is too strong, or the scale of your scene too big, or both !
