WOODEN product visualisations

Post by Polinalkrimizei » Sat Nov 28, 2015 11:29 am

So lately I got the chance of tinkering with some nice evermotion scenes.
At first, it sucked cause we bought them in the wrong file format - a huge kudos to Zom-B for helping me out by converting 4D-files to an exchange format (I work with Blender), despite being quite busy in other projects  !

The idea of WOODEN Germany is to make awesome glowing furniture made out of wood. So far, apart from quite unique projects in our region, we made different kinds of lamps, where all the light actually shines through a real thin layer of wood, which is then laminated onto glass. As we offer more variations than we can produce at once, we had to work with visualisations so the customer gets a glimpse of what is actually possible, and sees the different light colors produced by different kinds of wood.
And because evermotion offers nicer locations than our homes, we decided to give it a go with Indigo!

So here are some impressions, I'll post some updates over time, but beware I work really slow cause this is kind of a hobby for me... Most renders are done with BiDir, some with BiDir MLT (direct sun light + aperture diffraction, or lots of stainless steel...). Render times greatly vary, the big kitchen scene took like 30h on my core I7 (overclocked) and only like 7 minutes on the ranch...
Everything is straight out of Indigo, just because I don't know how to post pro! Comments in this regard are most welcome.
Cheers

I'm totally loving the concept of a wood filter. I'm wondering how the kitchen would look like lighted with a RGB~ish triad along the pane.

Actually we're using state-of-the-art LED technology to light the wood, and RGB LEDs are available, too. So you can control the actual color of the light via app 8)

Very nice! The renderings as well as the products!

As you are building physical products, how well does the rendered imagery compare with the actual look and feel of your products ?

Thanks guys :) !
@Headroom: It does compare quite well after lots of fiddling and reference pics. I attached a photo of our DICE as well as a render with a similar piece of wood. The background of the photo was pretty black so it shines a little more, makes me wonder if I could use post pro on the render... but then again, each wood is a little different.
In fact Indigo simulates it so well we use it visualize woods we don't work with yet!

Thanks bubs for your old white wall, it is awesome and I use it a lot!

This later render is very cool as well. Just not fond of those coloured letters, doesn't look as classy as the rest of the lamp.

Oh I thought the coloring was coming from the wood essence, I was naive :)

Nooo, you are absolutely right! The coloring shown is what happens when you put a white (around 3000K) LED inside. This is the standard option, with the coloring coming only from the verneer. The RGB version is just an option for more variety, or if you want to sync your lamp with your music..

@Oscar: Thanks man! I like the black and white versions better as well... The colors make actually more sense with other verneers I did not show yet.
