Today I updated an older Scene that I took from Daz3D and "piped it up":

Definitely an improvement! 8) Did you include an additional light source and some fog for that shaft of light on the dragon's face or is that Post?

Hey Bubs,

its a mixture of all you mentioned

At first I pushed the lightsource from above quite a lot, achieving this nice definition on the dragons head & neck and the hero too.

Then I rendered a "God Rays Pass" by setting all Meshes to be invisible to camra, turning off all lightsources beside the top one. The Light from above was reduced in sice to be very small and produce more defined god rays. Here you have the result of this pass:
god_rays.jpg
Then I edited this pass in PS to focus on the hero area and added some subtle post pro bloom:

Here you have the pure Indigo output, where I achieved a sweet contrasty look using the "Ectachrome-400XCD" Camera profile for tonemapping:

That looks like a pretty heavy scene, did you still have to go through the meshes all one by one or is there some quick way to select all? (note to Devs if there isn't this could be a useful feature!)

In the C4D Exporter there is a simple composition Tag where you can set a object or group (!) to be invisible to camera.
So I grouped the whole scene except the Fog volume and applied that tag to that group and hit render 8)

Ah! Never thought of that... not that I ever tried to achieve this effect, but good to know! 8)

I have to say, 'god_rays' and 'final_bloom' are very appealing images in their own right! very cool...

Nice! Looks like a 2D version of a deep compo volume pass. Is that fog?
I sometimes do this stuff with a Z-Pass and directional blur. It's ghetto and not as nice, but is neat because you can flip it and have inverted depth values for both fg and bg.

Ehmm... a what?!

Yes I use a fog volume for that.

Sounds like a interesting technique to something to test, you can't have enough Tools at your belt ;)

Yeah def, Z-Passes can create a lot of useful stuff.

And deep volumes are pretty much the same thing you have, just in 3D.

This can work well when done subtly. I've used inverted Z-depth as fog a number of times, you just set the layer to 'Screen' is PS and adjust the levels and opacity to suit. This is what is looks like on the concrete house I did a few weeks back...

Amazing fog pass technique Zom-B, I never thought of that. I'm noob with z-passes technics too, enjoying the discussion :)

Very nice shots! The only thing I don't like is this geometry and wood texture on these timber girder at the ceiling. The texture should better be turned by 90° for my taste.

I fought a long fight to get rid of the wood texture of the ceiling but without success
Nice the approved here ^^

There are quite some things that in my eyes where decided by the customer in I direction that I don't would go, but you know how that is.
I aim for a own interpretation of these three rooms at some point, but for now I'm happy working on something else first ;)
