Displacement

Hi, for most of you its probably lame question but here is it :
I never had problem with displacement in another renderers, but im trying to displace something in indigo and i want to cut my hairs. Im not sure where im doing mistakes but please, if its possible, i need to describe some informations. Im using max/maxigo.

1. What is better to use ? Displacement in material or maxigo displacement modifier?
2. I need to have prepared object?Or displacement depends on objects structure ?
3. How to use smoothing, how much subdiv etc ?

Thanks...
indigo is superb but displacement is making me MAD.

Example : I need to displace this carpet...any ideas?

Hi, DCM.
I´ve tried a mesh displacement with some of your pics, and it works. I´m a Cinema 4D user, so I don´t know how is the interface of Maxigo.
But sure Cindigo and Maxigo works in a very similar way. So:
1) Is good that the mesh to be displaced are polygon dense already.
2) You need both displacement controls: the maxigo shader and the maxigo object modifier.
3) There is a good tutorial on how to use displacement parameters at: http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... =19&t=6829
Hope it helps!

Displacement under material and displacement modifier are exactly the same, except modifier misses "view dependant" parameter and it can show you the approx number of polygons after subdivision. Only pick one of them and don't use both on one mesh. Subdiv parameter is the main one to tweak in combination with Displacement strength. Try a material with View. dep = On, SubDiv = 8 and start playing with the strength.

[edit]
Using displacement may mess up your uv coords. It's a known bug.

Hey Suvakas, then displacement works a bit different under Maxigo.
In Cindigo, in the displacement properties of the shader, you only have the texture parameters a, b, c, and in the modifier tag, the parameters to control all displacement properties (nº subdivs, pixel threshod, etc).
DCM, sorry if I messed you.

Cheers!

Well, smoothing + texture is broken atm: http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... 387#p90387
But Glare is working on this issue :)

Smoothing is a great feature that rounds the mesh dependent to the normal_smoothing parameter in your 3D app.
a cube with smoothing on and 5 subdivs becomes a nice sphere

That looks great! Very convincing.

Are we ever going to fix the preview model?

:(

What exactly is wrong with it? Perhaps you would like to fix it up and flick it over? :)
