Indigo renderer compatibility with MacOS 10.14 Mojave

Post by RDRichards » Thu Sep 27, 2018 7:25 am

For the first time since the introduction of the Mac in 1984 I installed none of the betas for MacOS 10.14 Mojave. Does anyone have any experience with either/both the SketchUp Mac exporter and the application? I believe all of the other programs I actively use are compatible.

I use Indigo Renderer on my computer only for small projects and to prepare scenes to be sent to a render farm.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Ralph

Hi

I would be very interested in the answer to this as well.

I have just signed up to the forum after installing the trial version on a new iMac, running OS Mojave, and Sketchup Pro 2018.

I do realise that at the moment, as far as I'm aware, Sketchup Pro 2018 is not officially compatible with Mojave, however, it seems to work.

So far, I'm really impressed with Indigo and find it really quick, especially as it can use my AMD 4GB GPU.

My equipment is this;

iMac i7 4.2GHz 2017 Model, with 40GB of RAM, 4GB AMD GPU

I'd be very interested in knowing the following;

1 - Use of Indigo under OS Mojave. As above, is it compatible, and will it still be able to use the GPU?
2 - Is Indigo compatible with External GPUs, such as the Blackmagic AMD one?

I don't do a lot of rendering, but do find it a really valuable resource for presenting to Clients.

Kind regards

Mike

Hi there,

Indigo should run just fine under macOS Mojave.

Regarding external GPUs, as long as macOS supports that specific kind of GPU, Indigo shouldn't have any trouble using it.

Excellent!

Thank you Fused

Following an e-mail query the other day, I received a reply pointing me to the latest 4.2 Version, which I've downloaded, but now I can't seem to use it. From another post on the Forum, it seems I need to update the Skindigo Plugin as well, but I can't seem to find the latest version.

The latest SkIndigo for 4.2 is here: https://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vi ... 17&t=15005

Ignore the last post. I found it, and it now works.

BUT, it now seems to have stopped using my CPU, as shown in the Screenshot.

Apologies as I can not seem to attach an image.

Basically, in render Settings, when Rendering, it would list the CPU and the GPU. The CPU has now disappeared, even though Enable Open CL Rendering is ticked. Only the GPU is showing in the list.

That is intentional, the CPU devices aren't really suitable for OpenCL rendering (bad drivers, etc) and usually only slow rendering with OpenCL down than actually helping.

OK, so............

Solved that one too. Found the setting in Preferences to Show CPU. It did show a warning, but works ok.

Just received your reply, so next time I'm in it, I will disable it.

Such good news about the External GPU though.

I thank you for your really quick replies too. It produces brilliant results really quickly!!!!!

Definitely be purchasing this!

Kind regards

Glad I could help and very happy to hear you are satisfied with the results.

If you are only using the CPU, Indigo will probably be faster if you use it's CPU engine by disabling OpenCL (GPU rendering). There are also more rendering methods to choose from in the CPU engine. You should be able to compare the speed by looking at the samples per second in the status bar at the bottom.

Best,

Yves

I use eGPU on Mac OS without any problems. It's a great solution for me, as I get a light MBP, but with decent GPU rendering horsepower when I occasionally need it.

If you decide to go for an eGPU, make sure it's AMD though. The NVidia OpenCL drivers for Mac seem quite bad, and you're getting nowhere near the performance Windows users get from the same cards (as evident from the Indigo Benchmark results page).

Thank you Oscar J

That's very useful information. I'm looking at the new Blackmagic eGPU, which is AMD and compatible with the iMac.

Have to wait a few weeks before I get it though.

Just purchased Indigo and all good. Had a play with creating proxies for trees. It's brilliant! Imported a tree, created a Proxy, Scattered the tree, and rendered. Suddenly had over a thousand trees!!!! I input the wrong value for the scattering ;) Worked a treat though.

Only thing I have noticed, is at the top of the main Indigo window, there is a pull down box, that always has 'Beauty' in. Just curious as to what this is. Without opening Indigo again, I think it's titled something like 'Render Profile'?

Anyway, looking forward to using this more. So pleased I have found a Renderer that can use my GPU. And it is quick too!

Just need to get my head around applying materials now, and the order in which to do it.

That dropdown that says "Beauty" is for render channels. Here's the manual page on what that does and what it means: https://www.indigorenderer.com/document ... r-channels

Basically for compositing.
