[REQ] Sun scale factor

Post by zeitmeister » Wed Apr 26, 2017 3:40 am

Hey there,
it would be great being able to set a sun scale for less hard shadows...
perhaps for more hazier outdoor scenes.
What do you think?

Cheers, David

Hmm, I think you can change turbidity of the classic sun/sky model?

you also can put the sun on a separate Light Layer and control power there

Unfortunately both solutions won't provide what I have in mind. :)
Changing the turbidity changes the color of the envmap, too. Thats not what we want.
Changing the power of the sun lightsource/light layer does'nt result in smoother shadows.
So I really think that changing the size of the sun light model will give the effect.

+1, but I'm using such solution in Maxwell and it gives "artificial studio effect", if you know what I mean:

I think, that to work good it should add soft halo (radial gradient) around sun with variable size. This should give more true "sun behind cloud" effect.

At least traditionally, this would probably have gone completely against the grain of this strictly physically based renderer. :)

This is absolutely true... but every artist with a photographic aspiration is happy having the option.

Maybe workaround using distant IES can be fast enough.
Also I was experimenting with large disc (sphere was slower), as in Maxwell you can't have sun+hdri. Though currently I can't remember what size it should be. I will try to find this and put here.
