GPU rendering in future versions...?

Post by pavoda » Thu Dec 22, 2016 6:09 am

Hi all,

I am new in Indigo.
I know cinema4D renderer and VRay. But i love to indigo for first look (thanks to developers)
Functions like - pause render, edit tone mapping and exposure during rendering, lights layers, fast render settings, fast preview and other are very very useful for my workflow. But to reach clean render takes long time in some my scenes (mainly interiors)

I have a PC i5 2500K and GTX 960 and It is time to look for something stronger
GPU rendering in indigo on this PC is about 5 times faster then the CPU. I see nice potential for main GPU rendering, but I would like to use lights layers and seems it is not support in GPU rendering.

I'm very glad for new functions in version 4.0.47 (Mainly alpha background and region render)
But it is also any hope that will be possible GPU lights layers in some future version Indigo?
Also Exit portals or other render modes for GPU rendering support it will be very powerful

and yet another question
I would like see Indigo 4 support on ranchcomputing.com - is possible say where will be Indigo 4 final version?

I think about buy new PC for faster indigo rendering and this matters will affect decisions about the components.
I will invest to powerfull CPU or GPU or half to half? I'm not resolved yet

Thank you for any informations or predictions

Hi pavoda and welcome. Both exit portals and light layers are AFAIK close to being finished for GPU, so I think you can count on them being in there before long.

Regarding Indigo 4 on render farms that will indeed not be until stable, and I'm not sure even the devs know exactly when that will be.

Holding thumbs for fixing reflection problems too. But portals have required bidir... Interesting...

It's contegufo's test I think but can't find that post right now. I've checked now and these reflection problems seem to happen with arch glass put in windows too.
It seems it is visible in reflections (chrome, glass, doesn't matter) of directly lit diffuse surfaces.

Seems All Cool here. CPU & GPU
With exit portals. And with transparent arch glass also.

But GPU doesn't support portals, as well as portals are not supported on path tracing...

:) Then let me rephrase myself.. i could not reproduce the mentioned problem.
Via : GPU,CPU,Bidir,Pathtrc,MTL
Exit P on Pathtrc on CPU, + Bidir
And Transparent Arch glass via OpenCL & CPU.

Sure I get it, just trying to find out what's going on.
Are you sure C4D exports portal material? Could you check scene after opening in Indigo if there is portal material assigned?
With just PT (no bidir) I get no direct light inside scene (just sky) - seems logical, in manual it is stated: "Bi-directional path tracing mode must be used." I'm not sure if it's up to date though as e.g. cycles has got portals with simple pt. I also noticed that normal direction has no influence, could you check it?
When I try to render portal material with GPU I get message:

Code: Select all

GPU/OpenCL support not implemented yet for this type of material: ExitPortalMaterial
Here is original thread:

As OscarJ has written before, it seems portals have never got an 3.8 update.

As OscarJ has written before, it seems portals have never got an 3.8 update.
Will check them a bit later (running around town for the moment).
Well the test i made did not produce any crazy errors in reflection for me so........
Exit portals might have some issues but than again..if i think about them in a real word setting they are 4th dimension wormholes to the sunny side of the galaxy. :)
It always better to have an actual cut on the model then just going crazy with EP's all the way.

BUT that said the tutorial file has a GPU (1) and BiDir enabled by standard so yep it might be the case that EP's are using some older stuff from Indigo i'm no expert on this...(wish i could code Stuff like Indigo)
but some older ver of indigo used one GPU with Bidir i think (?!) SO it might be that that's causing the reflect problem. Not sure the scene is on R10 i'm on R18....so the first thing was to save out the scene as an R18 file and thous i did not see any error on reflection.

But will do a test later and update you on exitportals.

:D Mass confusion. Hopefully I can clear some things up.

* The current EPs play best with BiDir, especially if you have sunlight. This obviously has to change for the updated model as GPU is single dir PT for now. GPU mode doesn't support EPs at all ATM.

* GPU acceleration never had BiDir support in Indigo 3.

* You normally still cut real holes for windows when using EPs. The EPs are just there for Indigo to focus its samples efficiently.

* The missing reflections aren't rendering errors per se, just unusually slow sampling of said reflections. It's true that the current EPs mess that up sometimes (I tend not to use them if I have a lot of reflective materials), hopefully the new ones won't.

Hope Nick can provide some more details on the subject once he's back from vacay.

@Eneen : Yep it is one assigned after export. (checked)

@Eneen : Normal direction has influence... in a weird way. But still no funky stuff with reflection. :D

++Thanks Oscar!
