"Metal Pipe-thing..."

Post by madcoo » Thu Feb 18, 2010 8:18 pm

Hi all!

New project coming up : I'm going to work on industrial pipe parts kind of things (I don't know what the name is in English...)

I'm looking for photorealistic effect, but still can't get close enough to it.
Any idea about how I could make the object look more "real"?

I put the pipe-thing in a cube, and left open the roof in rectangular shapes (Exit Portal).
- Maybe a closed room with lights would look more like a studio photo?
- Maybe adding other objects around it would make the reflections look better?

Many thanks guys!!!
:D

Why not to use a studio setup + some kind of HDRI environment for reflections?
A good studio setup always looks professional for stuff like this.
Bunch of pipes in a closed sunny box is a bit surreal.

Thanks Suvakas, I'll try a studio setup (closed room with emitting objects for lamps).

Do you have a link for good (and free) HDRI maps on the web?

Many thanks again!

There is another solution djegoo: more work on the environement.

Can you see the flat horizon reflected in your pipes ? This empty space is a realism killer, try to populate it !

If your pipe is a reflecting object, then the reflected objects are critical to underline the shape, may them be studio lights. If there are no "identities" underlying the pipe's curves then the image results flat.

It's also about blocking light as you did with that big structure in the background, only that it has a low impact on the reflections.

The modeling is nice so far :)

No need to model a room. Just use a curved plane for backdrop and some rectangular planes for the lights. You know, the classical studio scene.
Can't remember any HDRI links atm, but search the forum. There should be some good links in some threads.
But I think that any random HDRI should do it cause you only need it for reflections. It also may even work out without the HDRI.

I thought I could share back...

What do you think about creating a new topic called "Royalty-Free HDRI resource" where everyone in the forum could post free HDRI links?

That "Metal Pipe Thing" would be called a Valve.

Usually valve bodies are made of either cast or forged metal. Looks like Stainless Steel in this case. Either way the surface is usually not as smooth and shiny as in your render. Also the transition between the pipes seems a little to sharp considering the manufacturing method for these kinds of things.

The hexagonal shape is usually there to accept a pipe wrench. As such it is unusual to have a ribbed surface as that is going to be deformed by the tool used for installation.

If you use an HDRI try to find something "industrial" looking.

Wow!

Many thanks for these useful pieces of information!!!

I'll keep this in mind when modelling and working on the materials!

Thanks!

And for some reason it reminds me that I need to finish HalfLife 2 at some day. :D

Check the sticky at the top of general: HDR 2 EXR + some HDR sites

Also, Suvakas - Finish it! You won't be disappointed.
