looks great, especially the crust. is that just a bump map on it?
I think the tiles should be a little shinier, it would look nice with a little of the cake reflected in the tiles.

yeah the model is so advanced... Its like a slice cut from an extruded pie. can you please post a guide in tutorials section?

I dare you to do one alike and share the outcome Deus, and no I'm not talking on doing a sliced cut extruded circle, I'm talking on doing something that captures the little pieces of detail that go unnoticed present in this very same picture, it should be a lot easy thing to do, I bet it wont take you any time at all...

Thanks for the comments pixie and everyone else. Yes Deus, it's quite a simple model, but right now I'm just trying to learn texturing. Once I'm finished, I'll be happy to share the final .blend and textures to help out beginners like me.
crojack, I'm using a displacement map to get the grainy look on the inside of the slice. The bump map wasn't exaggerated enough. And I agree, the tiles should be shinier.
As for the size of the tiles, the final scene will have the cake on a stand instead of on the floor with the yetis. I'll revisit the tile size once I get everything else in place in the scene. I'll post an update tomorrow. I'm still figuring a lot of stuff out, so progress is slow.

So I'm guessing you went/go to MSU? I'm from MS myself, a lot farther south though.
what's after this, some key lime and a mint julep

I'm originally from Hattiesburg, but went to school at MSU. I just finished my master's this summer and will be working here at MSU as a research associate for about a year. I love having spare time on my hands, something I haven't had in a while.

This is looking really good! A couple of crits though:
1) I would give the plate or pie dish a bit more thickness
2) the file mat, while looking very good on its own, really distracts you from the subject.
Both things are just a matter of taste though - the modeling and textures look great!

Thanks for the crits Phr0st, I agree with each.

Small update. Made the strawberries non-uniform, but they still look a little funky to me. Made the dripping chocolate syrup look a little better. Made the plate a little thicker, although probably not enough. I zoomed in on the cake so the tiles didn't distract as much.
Now that I'm more or less finished with the cake, I need to start building the scene around it...
