Compass

Post by Macrob » Thu Jul 03, 2008 8:52 pm

Hi all! I´m struggling a long time with this compass now. But somehow I´m not happy with it.
Any ideas what I can change?
I just ask about the model, not the lighting and scene setup ;)

By the way: This is just a 40 min render :P
Sometimes indigo scares me

Looking pretty good. Only suggestion is the shiny metal parts (lid, hinge and ring) are too clean compared to rest of compass.

I would also go for a more dramatic camera angle - maybe more three-quarter on and maybe a wider view? mean moving camera closer but should add drama - also increase the OOF DOF ( Out of Focus - Depth of Field  )

Apart from that it looks like a Compass  - congrats :D

I double Doug's last sentence, "it looks like a compass".. if you aren't really happy with the result, maybe it's because of the model you chose to make.. it's a compass :) how can you be any more happy with it, it looks great, accurate and seems to have a history to it. more interesting than that, apart from a more interesting camera setup, and perhaps a less boring light set-up, it's as good as can be. :)

take care

ps, 40 mins, geez, it's starting to render like a biased renderer, qua speed!

What´s wrong with a compass? I remember people rendering hmm ... vases
Imagine yourself lost in the jungle. Do you pray for a vase or a compass ?

OK, too shiny metals, complete "notch and bead sights" (?), texture the joints, ... improve scenesetup, ... else?

I see nothing at all wrong with this model - its great! I echo Doug's comments on the shiny metal parts... I think a good scratch map would work well there.

lol ! I have nothing against vases so far, just amused by the answer.

Perhaps you can add wear to the shapes, not only through textures ? Micro-bevel the lid, break the chamfered goemetry a bit, model scratches etc... Using weared textures is one level toward realism, modeling wear is top notch ! There you have some work left. Boy you asked for it ;)
