Monolithic Dome House

Post by dougal2 » Tue Apr 01, 2008 10:47 am

It's been a while since I moved any polygons around.

Here's a quick model of a 3-domed house re-created from the floorplan DWG.

The roof was the last thing i modeled, but it should have been the first. As it is I either face the near-impossible challenge of stitching the roof to the walls, or the far easier solution of re-making the walls by extruding the bottom edge loop of the roof. However then I'll need to cut the window and door holes, and put in the tweaks where the walls flatten out slightly again.

Both pics rendered to about 70 spp.

ROFL! well you dont have to. :P I started a dome when I got home yesterday after I saw yours. I chose to try the oblate ellipse(?) instead of the full dome though. It is slightly more difficult to work with these curves in SketchUp versus Maya. :? I'll post once I have a decent image though.

haha, my reaction was mostly because I've never had quite that unanimous a response to anything I've posted here.

I will try to finish it anyway, because I'm already learning lots of good (i hope) modelling tricks. For a start it's good to work out the order in which to do things ;)

With regards to the original curves, what I've actually done is to simply use them as a floorplan template and re-make everything in polygons rather than try to join, tidy and extrude etc the original curves.

I've re-done the walls now, here's the 1-piece roof+walls, and a wireframe (original curves in yellow).

really a nice start :D This'll be great, if you give it some interior and surrounding :)

i think the curveness should start at ground level on those houses. and not onyl the roofing.. but i might be wrong.

I decided that there's space in the roof for another level. The problem is then where to put the stairs and how to fit them in.
This is a solution I came up with (well, I didn't invent the bent stairs, but I thought they'd work well here).
Perhaps I'll adapt the stairs to make them actually fit the walls, or change their style to be a little more modern.
Perhaps I'll cut more of the ceiling away to create a more open balcony that overlooks the front door also (I measured that a 6' man would actually have to stoop a little to get up these stairs).
I dunno yet, still messing around with it.

Hi dougal :)

Looks good except it seems to have a burnt out sky. (tonemap check?) Probably not something you are worried about at this early stage or even at all. But I love to see a blue sky. It looks more realistic I guess. :)

i'm using exit portals, they tend to burn the sky.

Oh? I didn't know that. Too bad that happens, a flat white sky is hard to see any depth in it. Thanks for the info. :)
