Some trees made with arbaro tree generator
I wanted to make an outdoor scene with a lot of trees, but I found out my computer couldn't handle much more than a few trees for rendering so this idea is pretty much stopped unless I can figure out a more effecient way that will look really good when close up.

It's quite some work, I guess, but as all those leaves are similar, more than likely, you could easily make an instance of the leaves and place them again. Rotation, size and position still can be altered.
(Instancing via Alt+D)
Then, when you use the same tree model twice (which is more than likely the case), you can also do that for the whole tree.
That'll save a lot of memory.

I also tried Arbaro and it's pretty easy to export the tree and load it into Cinema4D.
Moreover, with the free plugin "Riptide", I finally could import polygon-selections and materials, so texturing was pretty easy.
Isn't there a similar feature in your 3D-Software (Import obj. with Selections + Mats)?
Edit:
Instances work fine:
59426808 polys (196 trees) take up 220 MB RAM.

No. I looked for an import option like that and didn't see any. I'm using blender.

I guess I'll look into instancing. [just tried it] It seems I'm just copying and pasting when I use alt+d (in blender).

Its cool. Just download it from the link I posted earlier and try it out. It's pretty simple once you find out all the settings.
