Make another UV set for the whole tree and smack a blurry blend map that blends between 2 color variations. Works like magic.

Additional UV layouts, what? And then? How knows any material which layout it should use?

Some light study.
Post in Photoshop,
recipe:
Bake a render
Take two different exposures
Add Foreground alpha

And presto, self made HDR

I used two different exposures from the same render, then baked the same scene with Foreground alpha and use it as alpha, so I could have more contrast.
