How did you do the skull?
I would make it a light, yellowish grey because below the dermis is the superficial fascia. I'm not sure that assigning the skull a phong material would render faster but it could be more accurate.
Also, instead of scaling the modified face (ie skull), it can simply be displaced inwards for 2-3 mm, that would be consistent.
