Jupiter, fantastic topic ! You know at my level it's not this much about maths, but memory from modular synthesis plus visual representation. "At my level", because indeed I'm lacking the knowledge of maths as well.

I've been having a go at the compositing challange from the cgtalk forums. Gave me a chance to try out some of the new features in indigo. Thin coating material and the shadow catcher. Think it needs a bit of tweaking on materials, but looking ok so far. Pontiac model by Giorgio Luciano

Looks pretty good.
The only 'tell' is where the grass meets the wheels, you can see it's composited.

If you look closely :) I think it's a damn fine job! 8)

Love the car composite ^^

Not sure what I was trying to achieve with this render... But it looks nice I think?
Rendered for 53 minutes with two lights and an EXR background using MLT with BiDir

Model was from http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/gsg-fr ... cinema-4d/
and the EXR from http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html

wonderful but...what is it?
Seems like a neon light, but the emitter shouldn't be made of glass
You could change this render with a more challenging job, trying to simulate the subtle translucency of the neon bulb..

Hmm... How should I go about doing that? Still pretty inexperienced with Indigo materials, and I only have RT so anything involving SSS or other full-version specific features are out... Some absorption maybe?

it's a geometry thing: the bulb has only got an exterior geometry, it's interior counterpart is missing. It is therefore a full glass object and not a gas container.

Remember that normals from a glass surface should always point outwards its volume (interior and exterior normals are pointing away from each other).

I never checked that when I pulled the object out of the content browser and applied materials to it. The fuse/glass part of it is just a helix and sweep spline it seems.
I duplicated that just now, shrank it down a bit, and reversed the normals and this is what I got. I only let it render for five minutes this time though.

It has a pretty odd shape, so getting the inner surface to scale down properly isn't really working the way I thought it would...

Try extruding the whole glass part (in component mode ? idk SU); its scaling must be done in the direction of each of its normals for an optimal result, not around a punctual center. Extrusion is the key I assume.

The black part caused by meshes intersecting or too close. It is showing that the interior part was scaled and not extruded, just as you mentionned :)

*nods* I'll revisit the scene later today and try that out =)

In the meantime...
I re-rendered this scene with a larger resolution, but as I changed the camera angle within Indigo standalone, I wasn't able to perfectly match the original view =/
Also added a second dino flying in the background in the widescreen version.

Definitely a simple render, as the achaeopteryx is the only object in the scene!

Hah it's okay :)

I took another look at the lightbulb scene and couldn't find a way to get some thickness onto it easily *shrugs* I haven't worked with splines enough. Converting it to a polygon object and extruding didn't do anything, and without access to the Cloth feature in Studio, there isn't any real easy way to add volume to it.

So for now... I guess it's a toy figure and not a real lightbulb? ^_^;

*Edited instead of making a new post* More simplicity:

Working on some SketchUp vegetation for a scene I'm working on.

Everything modeled in SketchUp except the girl (post-pro for scale).

..EVERYTHING MODELED IN SKETCHUP?!?!?
..or rendered from sketchup (geometry made in third party softwares)?

Delight us with a wireframe please!!!!
