Resistance is Futile (it's not what you think)
Here is a work in progress that I've been working on at lunch while at work. I am a chemist for a global paint supplier. I need to measure the resistivity of my products to ensure that they will not allow electrical flow, otherwise there could be a fire. One of my products starts off okay and then doesn't resist any more after it has been shipped to the customer. We've had this problem for years. It is very frustrating.
The phrase "Resistance is Futile" in a borg voice goes through my head when these problems arise.
Here is the meter that we use to check the product. Modeled in Blender 2.44 and rendered in Indigo 0.9 test 6.
I still need to add some minor texturing on several areas, but then it will be completed.
Thanks for looking.

nice setup!
looks like some kind of studio setup thing, but if it is and im seeing correctly, the backdrop is too sharp. it should be more of a subtle curve upwards, i can give you a nice blender studio setup file (that uses mesh emmiters) if you want.
about blender modeling complex stuff: of course it can, its just that often pple try extrude modeling and thats not very smart. what you do is make the parts separate, like the knob on the thingy-o-meter is prob separate from the huge rectangular mesh, right?

Yes, there are many objects here.
1) Body of meter
2) Metal Stand on back of meter
3) Plastic Poles on Top
4) Screws on top of Plastic Poles
5) LCD Display
6) Knob
7) Settings Plate under knob
8) Hex bolt on side
9) Jack
10) etc......
BbB
The set up was my first curved wall setup. I have a few renders where the wall is not noticable and curve doesn't seem sharp. I will try to change it back to that setting and try with some mesh lights.
If you do have a good setup, I'd still like to see it though.

the second part of your post was directed at BbB, but i think you meant me judging by the sections content....
heres the studio setup i used. i know its outta proportion, but you can always scale down and readjust the light strength. anyways, here:

complex modelling as opposed to what? some of the craziest scenes ive seen have been composed of very simple objects, arranged in a clever way. you break things down far enough, most anything can be pretty simple.
its in the hands of the artist, i say.
that being said, im not saying that PhilBo's scene is subpar by any means. in fact i like the simple composition and the extent of the details. it looks real. the only real thing thats bothering me is the sharply angle background, which someone mentioned before already.
