Making the Earth

Hi,

I'm trying to make the Earth, and why not some other planets...

But as you can see on the render, I have a problem on the circumferency of the sphere, where the light of the sun ends, it makes appear the triangles of the 3D sphere, and there is this hapening whatever the inclination of sun. Does any one have an idea to resolve this ?

Its made of one sphere with the Earth texture on it, and a bigger sphere with a PNG image of the clouds.
The Earth texture has a phong material and some bump mapping, And the cloud texture is a diffuse with some bump mapping too.

Everything is at real scale...

Any idea please ?

Why not make the displacement of the planet more high res?

Looks like a SketchUp smoothing issue to me...

No, no, Indigo always does that with sharp sunlight coming in to a low res mesh at a low angle.

Ok, can't say I ever tried something like this.

Thanks for the answers !
Well I guess its not the geometry because its a 20000 poly components... but why not...

The resolution of the map is 4k i think something like 8000*4000 pixels. The bump map is based on the texture so has the same resolution

You may check out this here if you go for some earth atmosphere simulation:

Indigo can do some nice stuff here: http://www.indigorenderer.com/images/at ... simulation

Thanks
I've seen this pages, but I dont see where are the explanations to create this earth atmosphere and its blue halo

I've seen, but how can I use the atmo material of the pig file scene, into my own scene ? can't I save the atmo material as a material, to import it in my scene ? How do I do please ?

"Edit" Ok I am sorry I've just found how to save materials

Well that's what I got whith this atmosphere material ^^
lol

Any suggestions ?

Yes, scale is VERY important here!
If your earth sphere is only 200cm big, the atmosphere will be quite... thin ^^

the shadow terminator issue here is best adressed by using sphere primitives for celestial bodies. If you were to need the use of displacement, then the sphere mesh should be subdivided 3 to 5 times as per normal.

edit: also on clouds I could not make a spherical projection up, making my model work at poles only.

Well everything is at real scale, the Earth is 6378137 meters large for a half diameter (dont know the word in English), and the clouds are at 10000meters high from the surface of the Earth.

But in fact I didn't scale correctly the atmosphere... but I m not sure how big I should set it up to be correct in real scale, since the real atmosphere is not clerly delimitated by a physical sphere
