HAHAHA, best solution... I should have thought of this one :D

@JK: thx for info, but regarding to those concrete panels, with 80x160, the storey height would be way less than 3m...

@silma: as student of architecture I can feel with you about these restrictions but on the other hand i think sometimes these rules are really usefull for people designing things that look awsome but are useless or really dangerous (concerned to staircases) ;)

Mor4us: As I can see it has three and a half panel(original image). That makes it 3,5 * 80 = 280 cm. So the storey is about 300 cm in height.

Cheers.

LOL
It's not all wasted though, the inspiration is fixed... :D
Silmä wrote:Regulations exist only to restrict architectural expression. The original stairs were much better looking, to hell with usability!
I cannot agree with you, the slope is too damn high! I've seen lot's of these kind of stairs, and while being usable they remain pretty, these ones I can't even imagine walking on the stairs with any given confort. Usability is not a reason to make something unaesthetic. there's lot's of usable solutions which are visually pleasing .

I'm an architect myself and the last comment was of course meant to be a joke. I do understand the reason for regulations, but at least where I'm from (Finland) they are ridiculously tight and really restrict what an architect can do, and sometimes force genuinely poor solutions (and I'm not speaking about aesthetics), especially in small apartments. Some of the regulations even contradict themselves making it physically impossible to do solutions that conform to all of them. It's a pain to visit cool buildings abroad and spot great details that would be illegal here, while simultaneously listening to the public moaning that architects are doing a poor job and things were so much better in ye olde days. But enough of the rant.

A 45 degree stair is a bit steep, but still perfectly usable (the regulation stairs go up to about 35). The biggest issue in that picture (assuming 280 cm height) is that there's one or two steps too many making the steps too small in general. We don't know what's up there, so there might be a perfectly reasonable explanation for a stair like that: if it's only a loft it would even be legal.

The UK's planning laws are equally as bad. But regulations should promote ingenuity.

Happy to hear you guys because I thought that only here in Italy design laws were a mess!
Go ahead then! Back to your crappy-looking laws-conform projects!

btw, I think the only country with liberal design rules is Japan

This is a WIP, I'm not fully satisfied with the rain and the frosty windows (since they yet to become frosty)

There must be something wrong with the radiator, I'm checking as we speak! ;)

Edit:
This is from a previous render

And this is a simple test scene where it seems to be working as expected

Some interesting MLT artifacts

It's interesting to check how the scene reacts with different light setups, namely my frosty glass

They are now, 1h:20m on two i7
frosty7.jpg
As intended although it needed more time to clear (2h20m so far)

It's a cold cold day, outside...
All in all it's quite a complex scene to render, it has lots of ies, lot's of indirect lighting (from the chandeliers to top, from an ies focus light against the wall on the back and an indirect light on the ceiling, plus an external light to add up to it. There were no tricks such as emmiters as walls or the ceiling removal, namely when the ceiling vastly contribute to the scene mood, no pack o GPUs harmed, just good old CPUs! :D

The dropplets in the windows seem to dark on mlt though...

Thanks Headroom for the kind words. :))

@ 6h I think it got the look I intended, one could have more samples thrown in without adding much.
If I was to remake I would ease the frost on the two center windows (or vice versa) to convey a sense of progression of the frost.
FrostyF.jpg
It's cold outside...
Here's the Light Layers which happen to be multiple, please don't mistake those with some Multilight® systems you can find elsewhere, as they may not strictly the same.
FrostyLayers.jpg
1st is the overall mood, 2nd and 3rd are different moods created with some of the light layers, and the rest are the individual layers (apart from the exterior which I find too dark to be of some relevance)

Nice work Pixie. You really nailed the wet glass effect.
The crop is pretty aggresive, I think!

Thanks master Ono. What do you mean by aggressive? Too narrow?

Isn't that an exterior shot, technically?
It's a fantastic effect. I feel cold staring into that apartment in the rain!
