power pole/isolator

I hope its not a bad decision creating a wip thread for this power pole/isolator, because in the past such projects ended more or less somewhere without a finished image when I was creating a wip thread. But this could be a good intent for the new year *finishing a cg project which has a wip thread*.

And for cotty an image from 3d view, im using blender:

I have to create a new power cable I think, its not yet the way I have it in mind or how I saw it on photos. The one you can see is done over curves, the problem is that I need one more detail level, I meen the twisted single wires should be build of five or six smaller single wires, and this seems not possible with curves and a bevel object (And I dont want to use bump here).

One question: does anybody know a website where I can get some textures of birds/feathers or high quality photos. I want to create a sparrow but didn't found any good resources yet. Any help would be appreciated.

I can tell you that I am not going OT yet. uf that was close

solarray, make your cables then kick our arses if that's any good as a motivation. Ofc you keep it to yourself, for energy concerns. You never know about the feedback otherwise ;)

Edit: You should

a: decide wich level of detail you want for the sparrow, then seek for adapted images globally and check for their copyrights, or

b: skin a sparrow.

Ok next progress. First I started modeling a sparrow in zbrush. Never used zbrush before, despite the huge abilities you have with this app, the handling of camera, objects and the user interface is so different and STRANGE to other 3d applications that Im wondering how people learn to use it or do you need some kind of zbrush gen ??

So what is worth showing at the moment are some feather tests Im doing, not completely finished yet, Im missing some bump mapping regarding the feather structure. Anyway it was easier than I thought, good textures seem to be the clue, as always.

Note: Its not the correct feather color of a sparrow

I would love to know more about that ceramic material! It looks so like you are using SSS, but maybe its just a illusion by some great Texture...

Love your materials, you can almost "feel" the ceramic and metals here! Keep it up, would like to see this finished :D

I'm quite familiar with the sharing and not finishing problem :p Would be a shame if the same would happen to this one.. :p

Cheers!

Thanks for your kind words, I will do my best, but it could take some time for the next sub steps.

By the way it seems impossible to find high resolution images of feathers of different sizes etc. The best solution would be white color to be able to fill it with the appropriate colors of the bird in photoshop.
So after some days of searching on google I got the idea to check ebay for feathers, and that was the answer :) Today I received them in my mailbox (Now I only have to scan them).

Unfortunately not. I also had less luck with the feathers which I got over ebay. Then I found another website from an ornithologic guy. He send me some scans of feather sets of a sparrow, but the feathers are a bit broken, cant say how its going with them, I didn't tested it yet.

At the moment Im a bit busy with another project I started for competition on cgsociety http://challenge.cgsociety.org/ (mudbox, armed and dangerous) therefore it has a higher priority.
