material feature request - link coating thickness with bump

Post by FakeShamus » Sat Oct 10, 2015 10:20 am

Hi, it just occurred to me that it would be a nice to have the option to link a coating material's surface bump with its thickness. this wouldn't matter on evenly coated surfaces, but when using ISL shaders or textures to vary thickness, or when defining areas of a material where a surface is coated or bare, it would be great (and realistic) if the coating actually added the correct surface bump according to its thickness.

similarly, and I'm not sure it doesn't already do this, but when using a bump on the underlying material surface, it would be awesome to be able to have the thickness of the coating realistically reflect the height of the underlying bump. on a painted wood, for example, having a coat of paint or varnish that appears thicker in the grooves of the wood and thinner where the grain protrudes.

to take the idea even further, having a viscosity setting or similar, which would generate a surface coating bump based on the underlying material's bump, smoothing it out for thicker liquids or matching closely to the underlying bump when the liquid is thin or less viscous.

just some thoughts...
