clip map tutorial?

Im looking to learn how to make things like painted glass. Anyone here remember Iron Man? You know that display that was part of the glass window? How would one go about making one of those?

The absorption layer functionality is perfect for stained glass windows etc. :)

My only concern is that it is not available through skindigo..
