[Req] Dispersion Scene

Post by Whaat » Thu Jul 30, 2009 4:40 am

Godzilla posted a cool dispersion scene here:
http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... 9&start=15

I am curious to know a few things about creating a nice dispersion scene. For example:
How do you create the beams of light?
What are the material settings for the prisms?
Any other tips for setting up the scene?

If you have created a nice dispersion scene, please share it (preferably in an editable format such as .blend) so we can learn from it. Thanks.

This is very simple.

Beam = a small light source inside a narrow closed space - one end closed, one open (like in the end of a tube or smth)
Prism material = specular glass with cauchy_b_coeff > 0 (larger values mean more saturated colors of spectrum)

That's it.

I am having more trouble creating this scene than I thought. I am not getting a nice rainbow effect. I have a prism that is about 2 inches across. Does the size of the prism matter? How big should the light source be? How big should the hole in the tube be? I have cauchy set at 0.003

Also, should the prism be sitting right on the ground or should there be a small gap (>0.2mm) between the ground and the prism?

Any other suggestions or tips? Could someone share a scene that works for them? Blender or SketchUp formats are welcome.

Thanks

Here's my scene.

(Ono/Benn, could you please make it so we could put 3d files in our attachments?)

It would be so much easier to just be able to upload it directly.

Thanks for the awesome scene godzilla! I want to use it in a SkIndigo tutorial to show how to set up a dispersion scene (if that's ok with you) :)

Here's the result out of SkIndigo:

The first time I rendered it, I used MNCR=5000. However, I got some fireflies so I re-rendered at MNCR=1000. Notice the difference?

A second rainbow is missing on the upper prism.

Now, what's the price?

Hello,
I'm fairly new to Indigo and I'm stuck at the lighting setup. There are several options to create emissions in Blender, and I don't succeed in creating a long narrow beam through 2 cubes emitting by a plane.

Could someone give me a hint?

Thanks in advance

@Godzilla

Your scene looks awesome. Could you tell what rendering mode and light setup you used?
Cause currently I'm using scenes I originally rendered with Luxrender to make sure the geometries are alright.
But somehow the scene is very dark, and Indigo renders much slower (BiDir) than Luxrender did(BiDir).

Greetings
