using exit portals

I'm able to get the exit portals to work (I can see through them and stuff and the normals are facing inwards towards the windows, but I find no noticeable speed increase, in fact it decreases the render speed by about 5 times! Are there any tricks to getting exit portals to work efficiently? I'm working with a closed room (no other openings other than those with exit portals)

thanks msu! I think that I've seen that thread before but didn't really take much notice at the time.

I'm not actually going to use exit portals now because I realise that the scene that I was doing had trees outside the window, but I'm sure I'll find another instance to use exit portals!
