different metals = same metal

Post by tornello » Sun Nov 02, 2014 9:27 pm

hello, I do not understand one thing.
When I define different types of metal in different colors, I do so:

I select for example the color gray and then:
1) materyal types = Metals
2) aplly preset = silver

then I select another color:, for example blue and then:
1) materyal types = Metals
2) aplly preset = gold

and it happens that also gray becomes gold metal: Why?

Hello tornello,

I am not familiar with SketchUp, but I guess that presets are .nk data files. In this case this applies:
NK data: The Indigo distribution comes with a set of lab-measured data for various metals. If one of these data sets is selected, the diffuse colour and specular reflectivity colour attributes are ignored.

Hi! and thank you for your answer.
.....but what should I do? Should I upload any NK file in a folder?

Maybe your materials are somehow linked together?

We'll have to wait for some Skindigo users, to help you out.

Can I ask what versions of Indigo and Skindigo you are using?
I am a SU user and I do not get this issue. I've attached a test with 3 different SU material set to 3 different metals and they all render fine...

HI! thanks.
Indigo: Indigo Renderer v3.6.26
skIndigo: 3.6.28.4
I have 3 questions if possible  :

1) You have chosen 3 different colors right?
So, when for example you click on the yellow cube:
a) material type = metal
b) and then gold
the cube becomes gold.
But if give gold to a green cube, does it become gold-green ?
(sorry for translation from italian)

2) If then I click on another cube and I give it for example silver, I see that the "apply preset" is changed also for the yellow cube, but the nk changes. Shouldn't apply preset change? (intact it makes confusion)

3) If instead of a color I give a metal skindigo material to a sketchup default metal texture, what does it happen?

Thank for your attention :)

Ok firstly I would strongly advise that you update to the most recent versions or Indigo & Skindigo http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... =1&t=13326

In response to your queries:

1. Yes I have 3 different colours in SU each set to 'Metal' and with a preset nk.data chosen Gold, Aluminium & Platinum in this example.
If you are using the Indigo presets then the colour of the material in SU does not matter - Gold is Gold on any SU colour... If you want a green / gold metal then you need to ignore the presets and set the colour you want in the 'specular' slot. You can experiment with the exponent value to make the metal more or less shiny.

2. Not sure what you are asking here sorry, but try the up to date Indigo and Skinidgo and your problems may be solved.

3. (I think this is what you are asking) If you want to use an image for a metal (instead of just a plain colour) then the process is the same as I described in 1. - Ignore the presets and choose the image in the 'specular' slot.
