Wanted: Scatter presets
Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
Hi sam, awesome work, thnak you.
Speaking of translucent material for the grass, I think the simple double sided thin will do the job

Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
I don't really understand how to use the double-sided thin materials.
I get a crash when I attempt to make one.
SKP file attached has an example.
Is there a little instruction guide I can read to learn how to put together these more advanced materials? The process isn't very intuitive to me.
Thanks for your help!

Hey sam, check out the manual about the double sided thin: http://indigorenderer.com/documentation ... sided-thin
A crash is definitely nothing that should happen!!
For simpler translucent grass you can also blend a Phong together with a Diffuse Transmitter (with the grass texture applied) using a "thikness map" where thin struktures get more DT and think more Phong.
Such a thickness map need to be "grayish" and not with pure black and pure white colors...

Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
Any chance we can make/upload our own presets?

Hi Sam, I recommend you use the 'Simple Thin' material, which exports to a double-sided thin material, but is kind of a simplified interface for it.ak-sam wrote:I don't really understand how to use the double-sided thin materials.

Nice one sam!
Is this grass using some double sided thin material? it looks great, but kind of.... hard & solid...
I also have to point you at this horrible bump map you use for that guy that seems to exist only of JPG block artifacts

Though it was a photo when looking at the thumbnail. As Zom-B said, the textures don't quite cut it.
Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
Thanks guys..,Yeah the man's pants are a disaster!
The model is great - its from Axyz and came with a bump map and everything.... honestly though, setting up materials settings takes far too long for me in Skindigo, and the properties are prone to changing when I alter materials or edit the component. It just not worth it for me at present.
The previous shot was just simple phong grass with a small bump map.
I've done some testing:
Double-sided thin - gives more variation in colour, but still looks 'solid.'
Turning bump-map off makes it feel 'lighter', so that's an improvement.
Blend - using a transparent material on the back face and about 0.7 blend factor...looks great - a little darker than I would like, but that could be adjusted. I take 50% performance hit compared to phone, so not good on very large areas.
Thin glass - similar to blend.
Phong using PNG with some opacity brushed into it - trying to acheive a good balance between speed and realism.
The attached render is PNG, phong, no bump. PNG is probably 85% opaque on average. DIfficult to see the opacity, to be honest.

Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
I must say that almost never it happens that grass is the focal part of an image. For my needs, it just has to look good enough not to steal the main attention from the architecture, and GOD THIS IS GOOD ENOUGH BY FAR! Congratulations! Great work!
..also, I tend to avoid applying "complicate" materials to secondary things: diffuse transmitter or double sided would be the best for grass, but at a huge cost in rendertime, in proportion. That's my 2 cents.

Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
I kinda liked the grass from the pic with the guy on it, because the grass looked a little darker and had a deeper green colour. As I said, I mistook it for a photo. My two cents.

Looks great Sam!
Re: Wanted: Scatter presets
Thanks Bubs!
I've used the grass quite a bit and it does look nice in renders. Now I have to fix export times..my system is hitting the wall at somewhere around 1million instances, even with a recent upgrade to 64gb RAM.
