The Making Of A Curtain

Post by Mongoose » Mon Apr 22, 2013 4:16 am

Hi there.. i have been trying to make a curtain for several hours and did not succeed, i don't even know if im going in the right path...
i know how to work with SU, i have been working with it for 6 yrs now, using the low grade renderer (Podium) the only problem is that i had no idea how working and changing materials work.. i need some guidance i am really new to indigo, and trying hard to understand please if someone can help me understand step by step how to make curtains, and how to understand how to work with materials and all of its benefits in indigo
thank you very much i will upload my work when ill finish rendering

Making of a curtain is a little bit to confusing for a beginer so I suggest something else. Since indigo can "read" invisible background of PNG file I have little trick for you. You can take the following textile texture and delete black background in photoshop and save as PNG file. When you make new material in sketchup with that PNG file, lower the texture as it should be for curtain and apply it on your model of curtain. When you render it you will have semitransparent curtain. You can also set same values for that material as some silk material from material data base on this site. Hope I helped! :)

Simply use a diffuse and blend in a Diffuse Transmitter material for 33% (tweak that value higher for more light transmitance).
No need for some microscopic holes in a texture at all :)

Dismiss the Glass of your window if it isn't visible at all for faster rendering, also give ExitPortals a try.

1st of all thank you very much,

Edit:
Btw i saw its "Whaat" lolz he is awsome

Hi mongoose!
First thing, don't refer to Podium as "low grade" :D It's very simple, so it's affordable for many users, but I've seen magic coming out of it. So my tip is not to loose it completely...

Second thing, I've learnt that detailing isn't always NEEDED.. In archviz, in most cases the curtains are a furniture thing, so you won't need to gat close views of those. I usually simply put a white fabric texture in the diffuse channel (sketchup color); the base geometry can be single sided too, not necessarily a volume. Then, I set the material to have opacity=20% or so. Before launching the render, make sure the SkIndigo material is DIFFUSE, not specular.

The banner render's curtain is done like this. 8)

oh i get it.. i had it all on Specular, i guess its the thing with getting transparency equal to your sketchup material, i will try it then...
i was using podium for about 5 yrs now, since it was released i think, i was enlightened by it had some jobs
done but not something stunning, eye blowing thing, just some work and personal projects.

i will try to apply what you said.. i am not giving up completely on podium just want a fresh start
