I'm just surprised to see so much difference in Nvidia favor with GPU of the same recent generation: AMD RX 480 - 14nm Polaris GCN 4.0 architecture and GTX 1060 - 16nm Pascal GP106 architecture.
Maybe as you wrote it's just Nvidia finally catching up in this sector also, after years of focus on DX performances. Maybe this time AMD is focused on DX12 more than OpenCL. Just curious since the OpenCL bench AMD side was always so better considering the same GPU price/target market level.

Never compared GPU with CPU scores, too easy win :).

yes it is, unfortunately.

surprising to see the poor score of 9590 !

Actually. I have a xeon x5450 and it crashes exactly how my phenom does. I doubt 4.1 is needed.

I think it is actually.

Yep. In Luxmark i get around 10.000-12.000 points on double GPU's.
In Indigo at best i'm around 7.000-7.200.
Well two different engines but let's work on the AMD side of things a bit in Indigo...on macOS speed and GPU rendering are the TOP things users come to Indigo.
I came for that too. But still i think Indigo is on a very good path!!
Keep it rocking guys!

I agree, though the points are not comparable - not only because the scenes are different, but also because the actual quality per sample is very different. Furthermore Lux GPU still has box noise, doesn't splat properly and just generally has lower image quality for the same SPP. Pixie tested that a while ago: http://www.indigorenderer.com/forum/vie ... =1#p135568

I think he focus for this still very young GPU engine is getting all the features in place.

The only thing that maybe could be compared is the performance ratio between GPUs, how well a GPU compare to another GPU (like 480 vs 1080) performe,
so you end up with numbers like: GPU A is 2.47 times faster then GPU B in that engine bla bla bla...

@Lycium

What sort of temperatures/cooling have you got for your overclocked 1070? I'm thinking of puttng together a dual 1070 machine (relying on selling my current pc) and was wondering what sort of cooling I would need for the GPUs?

Referring to the question why AMD cards have bad results in IndigoBench, I have the question if it is possible to use async compute with openCL. Can anyone give me an answer to this?

EDIT: @ Danj
I got 2 GTX 1070 Zotac Amp, in Indigo the TDP is not high. So you could use 2 cards with stock cooler and it will not get hotter than 75°C. But when you are gaming the cards will get much hotter. Sometimes I got 96°C on one card. Search for the card with best cooling on dual slot or even with triple-slot when it fits on your Mainboard. Case airflow is also Important.

Well, technically the AMD cards don't have "bad" results, they're still multiple times faster than CPUs. It's just that Maxwell and Pascal cards get really great results.

A Fury X has 8,602 GFLOPS single precision performance and a GTX 970 3.920 GFlops, but the 970 is faster in Indigo, so for me thats a bad result.

Edit: I thought one reason to consider Indigo as GPU renderer should be its compability with AMD cards, but as the Benchmarks are showing, there is little reason to consider Indigo for this point. If you want good performance you have to choose nVidia. So I wonder if there will be more optimisation for AMD cards.

We will be doing more optimisation for both AMD and Nvidia cards, yes.

Raw flops as a measurement is almost irrelevant. Data has to be fed to the arithmetic units. This has been a major problem for many years and is the limiting factor in most cases.

So you get less heat if rendering with Indigo?
Indigo should use more then 99% of your GPU power and therefore create as much heat as in gaming (maybe sometimes more...)
Can you check how much GPU usage Indigo causes for your cards?

Games will definitely utilise a GPU more than specialised GPGPU applications, since they "light up" many more transistors: GPUs have dedicated hardware for stuff like texture filtering and compression, HDR blending and multisampling AA, hierarchical z-buffer, ...

Hi, I ran 2 different setups on my rig and got almost matching scores:
Titan Z12.jpg
Titan Xs.jpg
If my strategy is to render a single image with high samples at high res, I use the 13 card setup, as over time/passes it generates the highest score. Although it takes longer at building OpenCL scenes and initially reaching its max speed, once it gets going it is overall faster with intensive renders.

However, if my strategy is to generate thousands of quick frames with low-sample counts, I use the 3 Titan X setup as it builds scenes faster, having only 3 cards, and reaches highest speed faster out of the gate.

What is more crucial to Indigo for building OpenCL scenes and reaching max render speed more quickly in case of Nvidia, core clock, CUDA cores?

Thanks!
Tony D.
