I don't like the models... but the render setup/lighting is superb. Although the render itself could cook for a few more hours..

About your crashing issue, maybe you don't have any halt commad after your main loop? If you just have return 0; at the end of your program, then it will close. It doesn't crash, it just closes.

:? Hmm, aren't exit portals kind of a biased idea. Surely with the perfect sampling algorithm you wouldn't have to tell the computer where the light was coming from. For example if (sometime in the future :P ) I was do to an animation where the exit was constantly changing and distorting Then don't...
