I don't know about the navigation, but maybe blender couldn't find python because you installed the wrong version...? Blender uses 2.4, while the newest python release is 2.5...

I sometimes have the same problems, and this is on both windows and linux, so i don't think linux is the problem.... But I have encountered the same problem on other joomla based sites also, so maybe it's a general joomla problem..?
