Allowing Indigo to use .obj meshes directly as it does with .3ds files would be much more than an upgrade for Maya/modo/ScketchUp/so on/... users.

If I was to rely on the reference only, I would say that texturing is not implemented... But in the 0.6 test 2 it's said that feature (bump and textures) are implemented; I couldn't find any description on how in the whole site. Nice to see that hot bread, mtiObjectEditor.mel edited ! I'm new here, answering ThatDude's call on CGTalk.
