http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrete_Fourier_transform The FFT and DFT are widely used in data compression, spectrum analysis and the solving of problems involve PDEs, but not in ray tracing. I think using a look-up table would increase rendering speed, but not by much. A well-programmed GI ray tr...

Thin film interfaces
I came across this paper which I thought would be of interest. It describes an algorithm to simulate optical dispersion in a dielectric of a thickness similar to that of the wavelength of visible light. The results are pretty cool and although the paper doesn't apply it to anything more complex than...

Nick, this reminds me of a similar problem I sometimes have with normals: http://www.raytracing.co.uk/stuff/normals.jpg When the local contribution is calculated on a surface with interpolated normals like the one above, the renderer thinks that the point is unoccluded (disregarding non-local surfac...

I'm guessing that Indigo uses a surface area heuristic to build the kd-tree. From my experience, certain polygon configurations (especially those that contain interlocking or abnormally shaped triangles; for example, some of the intricate Jotero mathe models) can upset the partitioning algorithm. Th...

finalRender threatened by unbiased competition?
I was browsing the finalRender website and found a "benchmark" test the company had done in order to highlight the difference between their renderer and an unbiased MLT/Monte Carlo approach. Click here to read the article What's interesting is precisely how they managed to end up such a poor image a...
