@manitwo: I think your image is extremely quality, but since when is it any modernistic (as opposed to modern)? Have you checked this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernism ? The distance of the Sun to the center of your scene should really really big, aligning the axis of the sphere to face always to the center helps here in pushing it up in space further. Having your sphere far away preservs the stencil like shadows, if you wan't some slightly softer edges, just move ...
