Btw, as the keynote was taking place in Wellington, I assume Ben was talking in NZ dollars.
So that'd be about US$56,000 or EUR41,000 at today's rates (still nice).

That said, "top two renderers in the world, the other one being Maxwell"... Come on! Don't push the reality distortion field too much

Re: Blender introduction video

I'm looking forward to the day I can throw out Windows and OSX and go all Linux for work. People who want to dump OS X in favour of Linux have spend too much time in a confined space with a HAL9000 as only companionship  To want to avoid Mac prices, perhaps, but OS X... seriously! Linux is way...

Yes, everyone knows that volumetric dispersion for cool laser effects is the number one requested feature for any renderer!

Re: Suggestion for indigo free vs indigo commerical

There is no "free version" of Indigo. There is an "evaluation version", which let you try out all of Indigo's features but does not really let you produce 'useful' results for obvious reasons. I think that keeping refering to the evaluation version a the "free version" is what confuses people and cr...

Re: Bespin...coding online litterally

Looks nice. I would say more a research project / HTML 5 (Safari only supports it in beta version) demo than an actual product. Personally I don't see much use to have a web-based code editor for actual real-life software development. And IMHO, this "collaboration" consisting in having several perso...

Re: Maxwell 2.0 - 2x to 5x speed up

Well, yes. The goal of a photo-realistic renderer, even physically-based, is to produce an image which the human eye cannot distinguish from an actual photo shot. The physical model used is an approximation in any case. The issue is to find "good" approximations. As for Maxwell, I think what I'm rea...

Re: Another free unbiased renderer goes commercial

But with a commercial render, they will get more pushed to make new features and keep it updated, and as kerkythea has been really slow in updating and so on latly, it will be for the best i gues :) Well, exactly. Why has Kerkythea development stalled in the past year? I would say because resources...

Re: Who else here is excited for Blender 2.5?

Exactly how is windows "less useable" on a mac than OS X? They should both run fine and Windows is no less useable than OS X. I think you misread my post... :? OS X provides a better user experience and a better useability than Windows... Obviously this claim depends on personal tastes for some tas...

Re: Who else here is excited for Blender 2.5?

yes its unix under the hood and i agree its probably the better approach to an OS but the rest... rotten. if youre a bash god and use the terminal for 90% of your tasks its probably ok.... but then you could also use linux... free :) As a desktop OS where the GUI and the user-friendliness matters a...

Re: Indigo is going commercial; Indigo 2.0
Nice to see there are people with some realistic perspective around here :)
Is it realistic or naive?

The fact remains that people who donated in effet financed a commercial venture for free. And no-one seems to acknowledge that fact.
