simple yet very effective... i really like it.
i think you can try the scene with a faint fill light like Borgleader said, and compare yourself, which one expresses better...
if i were you, i would try with a green light

i havent tried before but maybe you can make a separate model of your ship thats outline is 'a little bit smaller' than the original one and render for alpha mask. the important thing is, offcourse, not to scale the model smaller but, making its outline smaller, like the command 'offset' in autocad....
