you know, that's actually NOT what you'd want. you'd actually want a lightsource, emitting on the whole (parabolic) mirror, to get a wider beam PLUS less wideing (namely, if it's a pefect parabola, ZERO) :) I did it already, exactly as you describe. See the bottom of page 2 of this thread and the t...

Oh, okay -- you're using a lens-based collimator. When you said "collimator" I was thinking of the sort used for x-ray beams -- a tube with a grid in it (see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/52/Collimator.jpg). My concern with that was, of course, that most of the light would be absor...

Well, yes -- Indigo can't simulate the quantum effects that give rise to a laser, and it can't tell the difference between a coherent beam and an incoherent beam. It only keeps track of the intensity and wavelength of the light it's simulating, not the phase. If you were to make a lasing cavity in I...

Well, the major difference between a flashlight and a laser is the coherence of the laser beam, but of course Indigo doesn't simulate that. The other difference is that the light source in a flashlight is not at the focus of the mirror, so there's spread in the beam. A collimator would make it MORE ...

You could do that. I suspect it'd be more computationally wasteful though, just as in real life you'd waste more photons. With a collimator, you're basically throwing away any photon that's not going in the right direction to begin with. The advantage of the parabolic mirror is that it redirects the...

You're quite right, and in that case, you just need to move the emitter slightly closer to the parabolic mirror. Alternatively, you can make the emitter a little bit larger. As it stands, this beam will spread out a little bit because the emitter isn't a perfect point. The defining feature of a lase...

I'm glad to see the site back. I was starting to get worried that Indigo was dead. Congrats on keeping it alive!

I will once the final version is out, provided I have the right to do so. I need to double-check whether I'm allowed to reproduce parts of the manuscript elsewhere.

Indigo in the Journal of Molecular Biology

I've got a paper that will be appearing in the Journal of Molecular Biology soon. Fig. 1 shows the structure of SOD1, the protein on which I work, and it was rendered with Indigo 1.0.8. The accepted manuscript is now online, and the final version of the paper should be out before long. Here's the li...

I've uploaded a new retouched version. I didn't quite like the post work I had done on the previous version, so I reworked it a bit.

Thanks, folks. The 1600x1200 version is the highest resolution available. I'm not selling it, though you can download it freely for personal (i.e. non-commercial) use from this website (it's currently in the "New Artwork" section) or from my deviantART page (http://vmulligan.deviantart.com). If you'...

Very woaw image, and heavy :) TopMod ? Thanks! No, I modelled this in Wings 3D and tweaked it a little bit (and did the UV mapping) in ZBrush. There's a smoky texture on the object baked in Maya 7, and final scene setup was done with Softimage XSI 6.5. (I know it's weird to own both Maya and XSI, b...

The Deeps

Here's a work-in-progress piece that I've got rendering on four different computers at the moment (a total of seven cores). The scene uses a parabolic mirror to get parallel rays coming from above. To keep the shadows soft, I used a medium-valued Phong exponent on the parabolic mirror so that not al...

Incidentally, I just checked. The scene renders identically in 1.1.9 as it did in 1.1.8 -- same artefacts at UV seams on subdivided meshes.

v_mulligan I've had the same problem. (Using Blender/Blendigo.) The problem occurs when I use "Set Smooth" on a mesh (not sure what the setting is in SoftImage). The only way I could work around it was to turn off "Set Smooth" and increase my number of subdivisions. What happens if you UV Map a pla...
