To be more specific - it is terrain, made of contours using Sandbox, (lot of triangles) where I made some changes with the Artisan plugin (sculpting). Closing and opening the file again did not help. The wooden beams would look better with displacement - but how to avoid the "ugly" edges, because of the sharp corners? Probably I should use som ruby to bevel or soft them, but then I'll lost the sharp corners in SU usable for quick moving and such.

Let me ask a (stupid) question: Does GPU acceleration prompt you to use PT (Path Tracing) only?
