once I made strong shadeless white out of pure white diffuse (1.0 1.0 1.0), other materials in the scene I made much darker (i.e. for "red" material I set to 0.07 0.01 0.01), then I made tonemapping much brighter to make very dark image few times brighter. Indirect light was lost, but my white diffu...

Nice render :)
I think colors are too saturated. Adding some dust/smokelike medium should also help a lot. Green and red blocks for me might be darker, and yellow could pass more light.
BTW I like variations of yellow blocks. :)

Is that sun or flat emitter behind the glass?

I think that bump would complicate things a lot. (Two bumpsmaps? :P one for glass and one for coat + two IORmaps ). I think that at the start it should be only one map and one control 'strength' (or as you call this - 'depth') other settings inherited. And maybe in the future........ 'coatlik...

Interesting how your light starts out white and then suddenly gains energy when going through something absorbing :P Anyway... I think, the problem is, that absorption in Indigo is depth based. In my example i was thinking about a color as a very thin transparent coat painted over clear glass block...

I was testing some 'indigo forbidden stuff' and I found that something is wrong with exported xml. I saw this error before. It seems this happens when I use textures and export xml. But i don't know what this error mean. Did you have something like this before?

as of now, transparent specular materials cant be textured with color. theres the whole problem of how to map a 2d image onto a 3d volume (absorption takes thickness/volume into account, so how will the renderer know how deep the image map affects the color of the material? what about intersections...

model is very simple - just smoothed slightly twisted loft of starry shape
probably everything ridged made out of glass looks good and casts nice caustics :P 8)

I baked it some time ago I started from indigo 1.0.4 and ended with 1.0.6 rendering on 1 out of 2 cores few hours a day and saving IGIs ;) It's about 8000samples/px and there's some noise removed (GREYCstoration) A lot of new stuff is engaged: key light is IES, glass material it tabulated, camera ha...
