Coffee Table

Post by Headroom » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:52 am

Several weeks ago while surfing industrial design forums I came across an interesting design for a table http://www.pured.co.uk/component/k2/ite ... table.html.
I thought that the idea deserves to be better executed and here is my take on the idea.

I'm becoming more and more interested in how something like that would actually be made. Nice renderings! Needs some seams between the wood pieces, though.

Thanks Tom!

Yes, the making part is going to be the next step in this project.

Having been member of the local woodworkers guild in the past I have a pretty good idea of how this could be manufactured and have contemplated about asking the guild if there would be an experienced member that would be willing to mentor me through such a project.

The wood...well the texture I choose is that of white Oak which is according to some sources the best wood to steam bend. Pre-shaping the arc pieces would take place after bending. Joinery would could be achieved relatively simply with 9 floating tenons. then final shaping would take place to let the joint lines vanish and give the piece a more sculpted look and feel.

I agree that a few visible seams between the pieces would increase the realism of the renders. I had thought about it but freely admit my laziness. I was afraid to have to re-UVmap it and just did not want to mess with it anymore.
